Is it ok to have a HUGE key ring hanging from your car key…?

I’m getting my first car this summer!
And, I just realized that i have a gigantic key chain.
So, how much is ok to have hanging off your car key before its too heavy to stick in there?

The lighter and uncluttered you keep your key ring, the better off it wil be for you and the ignition switch. Too much weight can damage the tumblers and contacts inside over time.

Some key rings that are tied to credit cards, or gas purchases (Mobil Speed pass) usually interfere with the RF circuit that recognizes your key in the ignition. This is another reason to keep that stuff separate.

I always carry two key chains in my pocket. One for my car keys, which usually has one or two keys depending on my car, and another one for the house keys.

But on a more important level, there is a safety issue that arises from having a bunch of keys dangling above your leg. If you get into a collision, you will have the points of umpteen keys tearing open your leg from the knee to the thigh. I don’t like to get into graphic matters here, but this happened to a very good friend of mine, and she was in rehabilitation with two knee surgeries to boot for a good 18 months.
